BIOME & SEDTEC BIOME, the Philippine National Biodiversity Meeting in Catanduanes Island and SEDTEC, National Conference on Science, Education and Technology are held during the Catandungan Festival in October. These are being organized by Pacifictech (Pacific Island Institute for Pedagogy, Technology, Arts & Sciences, Inc.) with the support of the Provincial Government of Catanduanes through its Provincial Tourism Office. Although dealing with a variety of themes, the joint national scientific meeting originally stood for the “Biodiversity Meeting in Catanduanes Island, Philippines on Climate Change, Sustainable Development, Innovations, Political Ecology and Social Representations in Nature Conservation” and was organized for the first time in October 2010 (BIOME 1) and October 2011 (BIOME2-SEDTEC1). Hence, BIOME3 is being held again during the 2012 Catandungan Festival together with SEDTEC2 dubbed as the Philippine National Conference on Water and Biodiversity (NCWB) on 22-23 October 2012. BIOME and SEDTEC are to be organized in the island annually. However, after 2012 SEDTEC will be held every 2 years, i.e. at an interval that allows more scientific innovation. BIOME as a national conference is not aiming at massive attendance but at sessions covering different subtopics on biodiversity, climate change and sustainable development. The topics on Political Ecology, Innovations, Social Representations and Nature Conservation will still form as solid themes together with Water and Biodiversity for BIOME3 and SEDTEC2. The joint activity for BIOME3-SEDTEC2 NCWB aims to initiate a culture and tradition of providing a venue for researchers, teachers and practitioners to present their studies, innovations/inventions and experiences; to share their knowledge and exchange ideas; and to collaborate on projects to further strengthen the fields of biodiversity, climate change, science education, educational technology and sustainable development. BIOME3-SEDTEC2 topics: Water, biodiversity and ecosystems; Water, climate and renewable energy; Water science and engineering perspectives; Water and wastewater technologies; Water education and learning (research and teaching in marine biology, fisheries, aquaculture and freshwater sciences; and maritime education and ocean sciences); Water sanitation and health (WASH); Water resource policy and governance; Water on religions and beliefs; biodiversity and environmental flows in REWs; and Managing Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). BIOME/SEDTEC usually consists of a series of paper presentations and accompanied by the special Consultative Meeting (CONMEET) aiming at identifying gaps on biodiversity research and biodiversity conservation through fieldwork, analyses, development and implementation of island biodiversity conservation and climate change adaptation and mitigation programs/projects for the local government units (LGUs), NGOs, POs and academic institutions. However, during BIOME3-SEDTEC2 there will be significant changes and will have greatly simplified presentations patterned from IUCN congress format. Participating and non-participating attendees can choose from the following presentations during the conference: Contributed Research Paper Presentation This is a 20-minute presentation during the Conference proper about a completed research. A paper based on a thesis/dissertation can be acceptable in this category. Biodiversity Workshops This will be a 30-minute session during which the authors/organizers are asked to use creative approaches (interactive dialogue techniques, simulations and gaming, etc.) to engage attendees to share their knowledge and know-how, and to foster understanding and consensus-building on issues. A workshop can be used to showcase innovations and solutions, present community and local level initiatives, policy and governance reforms, traditional and indigenous knowledge, new and more sustainable business models and investment opportunities, initiatives that inspire ethical behavior, youth action, action to address gender equality and equity, latest technologies and emerging multi-sectoral partnerships. This type of event is ideal for formalizing alliances or partnerships to take concrete action. Biodiversity Knowledge Cafés The Knowledge Café will consist of hosted roundtable discussion involving up to 15 people. This aims to foster mutual understanding, explore areas of common interest, network, share experiences, and explore possible partnerships or joint ventures. For BIOME3 SEDTEC2, up to two (2) discussions will be held at different schedules that will last for 50 to 60 minutes simultaneously. A Knowledge Café session is a type of business meeting or organizational workshop in which a group of people have an open, creative conversation on a topic of mutual interest to share their collective knowledge, ideas and insights, and gain a deeper understanding of the subject and the issues involved. A separate area will be assigned for your discussion and will be properly identified with the title of your discussion topic and your name. Think creatively about how to engage participants in your discussion. Use innovative and interactive techniques to involve them. Don’t hesitate to be provocative, the discussion will be more animated and the outputs probably more outstanding. In the Knowledge Café, the host of the discussion serves as the facilitator. While not required, you may find it helpful to record the key conclusions of your discussion. Scientific and Institutional Posters (20 slots) Posters are a great way to showcase research, instruction, extension, production, conservation work and achievements in an easy and direct way. Your poster can display innovations and solutions, present community and local level initiatives, policy and governance reforms, traditional and local/indigenous knowledge, new and more sustainable innovations/models and funding opportunities, initiatives that inspire ethical behavior, youth action, action to address gender equality and equity, latest technologies and emerging multi-sectoral partnerships, etc. You will be assigned a panel in the Poster Area at the venue. The title of your poster, your name and institutional affiliation will be listed in the Programme and will also appear on the panel assigned to you for you to identify it more easily. Poster sessions will be formally scheduled during lunch breaks and after 5 pm sessions. You will have the opportunity to “host” your poster and answer questions during these two (2) lunch breaks and at 5:00 pm during the first day of the conference. Please note that Posters can be displayed from the Pre-Conference Day (October 20) until :Post-Conference (October 25). However, if you opted for 2 days only during the conference proper then arrangements can be made. You will be responsible for putting your poster up on the morning of the first day and for taking it down at the end of the conference. Biodiversity Campus (4 slots) The Biodiversity Campus provides a place for interactive training sessions which develop new skills and knowledge transfer on relevant topics. The training sessions will be delivered through a one hour modules to provide an exploration of topics aimed at building the capacity of participants through direct learning and interactive approaches on topics relevant to the theme of the conference. Sessions at the Conservation Campus need to be clearly aimed at building participants’ capacity and skills on a specific topic. The Conservation Campus sessions being delivered in Catanduanes will contribute to BIOME-SEDTEC Conservation Campus Learning Modules which will be useful for people to build their skills and capacity in many aspects such as tools, techniques and approaches beyond the conference. 15 August 2012 deadline: abstract submission For abstract submission and further details about the Conference please contact the following by using the email: pacifictechjtm@yahoo.com
